Question: How do I just list my contact details, without becoming a site member?
Answer: Follow the link in the bar near the top of this page called 'Register', selecting the option
'List my details only' on the next page. This will allow you to add yourself to the site,
without needing a password. If at any point you want more access to the
site, you can simply upgrade later.
Question: How can I upgrade to a full member?
Answer: Sign in with just your name and follow the instructions to become a full member.
Question: What does it cost to use the site or to be a member?
Answer: Absolutely nothing, over what it costs you to access the Internet. The
CGS Contact Forum is a non-profit entity, where membership and use are both entirely free. Any fees for hosting the web site are met in full by the Site Maintainer.
Question: What does it mean when it says that I don't have a password at present?
Answer: It means you're a basic site member without a password, so you need to
upgrade to a full member to be able to Sign-In. You can do this by submitting
your name and a blank password in a Sign-In form, and clicking 'Request
Upgraded Membership'. If you were a member of the first version of the
CGS Contact Forum (pre-Sept 2001), you will need to request a user upgrade
to continue using the site. The security system was rewritten and passwords
could not be transferred because the encryption method was changed.
Question: Why can't I use the site on two different computers at the same time?
Answer: To prevent abuse of your account, safeguards are built into the site
security. You can only Sign-In to your account from a single computer at
any one time. This provides a vast improvement in the overall security
and integrity of the site.
Question: Why did I get signed out of the site? I didn't click on 'Sign Out'.
Answer: There are two likely explanations. Most likely, your modem connection
dropped (e.g. due to inactivity or a set connection time limit) and re-dialled.
If you were given a different IP address when it reconnected, then the site
is forced to sign you out, for the security of your account. Another
possibility (but far less likely) is that you or another person signed-in to your account on a
different machine and the existing session was ended. Again, this makes it
much more difficult for any would-be miscreant to use your account without
your knowledge. If you have any account-related problems, don't hesitate to
e-mail the Site Maintainer.
Question: Is the CGS Contact Forum an official site for former Caistorians?
Answer: Not at present, although if the member base expands over the next month or
two it may well be the case that it is put forward to become an official
resource.
Question: What are the ownership issues involved with posting on this site?
Answer: If you post or contribute something to the site, e.g. textual messages,
images and so forth, you are the full and acknowledged owner of your
message, article, file or image. The site scripts, xCGS images, page design,
HTML code and anything else are all copyright (c) 2004 Andrew West (the xCGS.org Site Maintainer) e-mail use-weblink-on-each-page-not-this-address@xcgs.org .
Question: Can I copy text, graphics, articles from site pages?
Answer: No, you cannot duplicate or retransmit via any medium any web pages, graphics,
other files, their contents (or any data that resolves to said information,
including but not limited to all forms of encryption) without the written
permission of both the Site Maintainer and any other individuals who hold the
ownership on part of those pages (for example, by owning individual articles or
messages). Any other use is not permissible. You may provide links to this
site, so as not to duplicate copyrighted material. The previous Q/A is also
relevant to this answer.
Question: How can I advertise on this site?
Answer: If you want to promote Caistor-related events, please use the Event Calendar
feature, or the Message Forums to let Former Caistorians know. If you're an
advertiser: One of the founding intentions of the site was to be
advertisement-free, which it has maintained over most of its time in existence.
Now that the hosting is on a quality web service, the site pledges to remain
free of any advertising, product placement, sponsors' banners etc. for as long
as it exists. I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere to stick your gaudy
banners. You might e-mail the Site Maintainer if you require suggestions.
Question: Can I get hold of the CGS Contact Forum site's source code?
Answer: Yes and no. For the forseeable future, to keep the Site Maintainer's interest in
continuing development of the site, main blocks of the source code is not available. However it's quite likely that at least parts of the site will be available in source form soon.
Question: How do you make a site like this?
Answer: Any tips you might want on Perl and simple web design are freely available by e-mail from the Site Maintainer, if you're interested in that sort of thing feel free to drop a line.
Question: I can't find the answer to my question. Help?!
Answer: E-mail the Site Maintainer, a link's at the end of each page, with any questions you might have. As far as is possible, an answer will be with you the same day.
